Who, Why, What and How?

Welcome to my very first blog post in my first-ever blog!

Before we make any saw dust, let’s take care of some business…

Who am I? My name is Scott and I have “grain damage” (thanks to my buddy Dave for this awesome phrase)! I’m woodworker, furniture builder and enjoy designing my own furniture plans. I also repurpose discarded items into new projects. My experience is a combination of self education and formal woodworking/furniture making classes.

Why create a blog about woodworking and furniture building? Aren’t there already sites like this? There sure are. A few of my favorites include: ana-white.com (I’ve posted some of my plans there. My user name is Knot Perfect), Shanty 2 Chic, and Lady Goats and many more. It’s awesome that so many people are willing to share their plans for FREE! And that’s what I hope to do here. Share my easy-to-build furniture plans for FREE, so you can make some cool projects for your home.

What is “Saws on Skates”? The name is a wink and a nod to my tiny workshop. My workshop measures 10′ x 13′ and all of my tools are on wheels, so Saws on Skates! In addition to sharing free plans, we’ll also explore setting up a small shop, maximizing storage, minimizing floor space, so we can create big impact projects in a small space.

How can you get involved? Post comments, ask questions and share your own projects. Have an idea for a project or interested in seeing plans for particular piece? Let me know and I’ll see what I can come up with.

If you have a blog, don’t be afraid to offer blog suggestions. As I mentioned this is my first blog and I don’t have any idea how to set this thing up! I’m sure things will get better as we go along. In the meantime, bare with me as I learn the bloggin’ ropes. Also, don’t be afraid to point out an spelling errors, grammatical errors or errors with any of the plans and I will be sure to fix them.

Before we get started, as Norm Abrams would say, “Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: there is no more important safety rule than to wear these — safety glasses.” I would also add wearing hearing protection and a dust mask.
