Workshop Safety Tips
“Before we use any power tools, let’s take a moment to talk about shop safety. Be sure to read, understand, and follow all the safety rules that come with your power tools. Knowing how to use your power tools properly will greatly reduce the risk of personal injury. And remember this: there is no more important safety rule than to wear these — safety glasses.”
Norm Abrams, New Yankee Workshop
Just like the Pledge of Allegiance, I can recite Norm’s shop safety quote word-for-word. Honestly, it’s just that important. I take shop safety very seriously. I’ll tell you why…
Around the time I was in college I bought my first table saw. And just like Ralphie in “A Christmas Story” I was told “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Well, not exactly. More like “You’ll cut your finger off!” And that’s nearly what I did. I didn’t respect the saw. I didn’t respect that it could hurt me. That it could take off the corner of my thumb… or possibly worse. Ever since then I’ve done everything I could to ensure safety in my shop.
