All Things Autumn, GIVEAWAY and 10/18 Sunday Sneak Peek

Hey there Skatemates! How was your week? I had some free time this past week, so I took a break from my projects and set out to soak in all autumn has to offer.

I started by making a homemade pumpkin pound cake. Well, it was actually a recipe for sweet potato pound cake from an issue of Southern Living magazine, but I substituted pumpkin for the sweet potato. How amazing does this look? I wish I had a piece right now, but as I type this, I’m staring at a crumb covered cake plate. Maybe it’s time to make an apple pie!

Next up I took a trip to Kay’s Pizza in Burden Lake, NY. Kay’s is one of those little gems that only locals know about and is only open a few months of the year. It sits right on the lake and looks like it may have seen a flood or two… or thirty. The roof line of the small building undulates like rolling waves of the ocean and has floors to match. At some of the tables you actually sit a good six inches above (or below) your dining partners because the floors are so warped. But that only adds to the charm of this place. This pic of the lake was snapped on the way home from the season closing day at Kay’s.

Next I went in search of cider, cider doughnuts and a good pumpkin ale. The Cider Fest at the Fly Creek Cider Mill just outside of Cooperstown, NY seemed like the perfect place to cross two items off my list. I could see many reminders of fall as I approached the Mill, brightly colored mums, perfectly placed pumpkins, crispy cornstalks and… people. Lots of them. Oh wait… there’s MORE people! This place was PACKED! I thought getting there about a half hour before the end of the festival that I would have the place to myself. NOPE! The line for doughnuts had to be 150 people deep. I decided to skip the doughnuts and move on to my next quest of finding a pumpkin ale.

From the Cider Mill I headed towards Roots Brewing in Oneonta. On the way, in the middle of a field I spotted a sign for “Dobler’s Brewery and Tavern”. This place wasn’t on Yelp! With only seconds to react I began braking and down shifting from 5th to 4th to hold on, as I screeched into the driveway. There was only a car, a motorcycle and a vintage truck in the parking lot, so I wasn’t even sure if it was open.

Inside I found a tasteful tap room with six beers on draft and a jar of pickled kielbasa on the counter. They didn’t have a pumpkin ale, and I wasn’t about to try the kielbasa, but I did have a pint of their oatmeal stout. It was a pretty respectable brew for being out in the middle of nowhere. Well not nowhere, Mount Vision, NY to be exact. I’d never heard of Mount Vision, but after trying their pretzel sticks with honey mustard sauce and the homemade potato chips, I knew I would be back.

Still in pursuit of a pumpkin ale, the following day I headed out to Madison Brewing in Bennington, VT. In keeping with my all things autumn theme I picked up a pumpkin spice coffee from Dunkin Donuts for the trip to the brewery. I hit the jackpot at the brewery… they had a pumpkin ale on tap! It was served in a cinnamon sugar rimmed glass and it was delicious. I forgot my growler at home or else I would have been taking some pumpkin ale home with me.

After the brewery I went in search of one of Vermont’s famed covered bridges. The first stop was the Henry Bridge. The air was crisp and the smell of fall leaves was strong here.

The next covered bridge I hit up was Buskirks Bridge in Buskirk, NY

My final stop for the day was Lakeside Farms in Ballston Lake, NY for cider and doughnuts.

Sunday Sneak Peek
A new furniture project plan will be coming soon, but there is something I’m really excited about. I’m working on my first video tutorial! There is still lots of work to finish the video, but it’s progressing well. The new plans and the video should be finished in the next few weeks. I hope you’ll enjoy both.
