Easy to Make DIY Dog Projects

Hey there friends! This Friday is a special day at our house. Coco and I will be celebrating the second anniversary of her “gotcha day”! I can’t believe it’s been two years since I adopted her. Man, time flies when you’re a puppy dad! To celebrate her gotcha day we’ll look at the DIY dog projects I’ve created for Coco over the past two years.

These easy, DIY dog projects would be perfect to make for my pup! There's a dog bed, dog gate, dog treats container and a poop bag dispenser. Plus there are some great gift ideas for dog parents.

Since we’re celebrating her gotcha day, I should tell you about her gotcha day before we look at the DIY dog projects. I first noticed Coco on an animal shelter website. She was a mangy looking thing, but I wanted to meet her, so my buddy Jamie and I took a trip to the shelter. At first they couldn’t find her. It turns out she was in a separate area recovering from a surgery. Mangy and recovering from surgery… poor little girl.

Once they located her, they brought her to the meet ‘n greet room. Coco strutted through the doorway, walked directly to me and gave me a kiss! Initially she ignored Jamie, focusing her attention on me as if to say “I gotta impress this guy, so he’ll take me home!” She seemed like the perfect dog, but believe it or not, I thought she was too big!!! I mean really, look at her in this pic. Does she look too big to you?!

I hate to admit this, but I actually left without her! I told Jamie “I need a beer and some time to think about this!” We went to a local pub to grab a bite and discuss Coco. Jamie kept showing me the pic of Coco and me at the shelter saying things like “She’s waiting for you to rescue her. What more do you want? She’s perfect!” We finished our meal, got in the car and went back to the shelter. I raced to the front desk and said I wanted to see Coco again. Guess what? They couldn’t find her!

OMG! Where was that little cutie pie? Was she already adopted? We weren’t even gone that long… how could she be adopted already?! Panic set in and it slipped my mind that earlier she was in a recovery area. Well that’s where she was again. We got reacquainted and after a few minutes I said “I wanna adopt her!” We only knew each other a few days before we set off for our first adventure, a camping trip. We’ve come a long way since this scruffy camping picture.

One of the things I’ve learned over the past two years is Coco loves DIY projects almost as much as her dad. She’s indifferent about pet stores, but she practically sprints towards the Home Depot door! On a recent trip, Home Depot even rolled out the welcome mat (OK, planter stand) for her! Isn’t it great that more stores allow us to bring our furry friends with us?

Just like I make furniture and home decor projects for me, over our two years together, I’ve made some cool DIY dog projects for Coco. Here are my favorites…

DIY Dog Projects

Dog Bed
This DIY dog bed that looks like a recycled drawer, but is made with all new wood. It was designed to fit a standard size bed pillow and pillow case, so cleaning is a snap. It’s not only great for dogs… cats like it too!

Dog Gate
This is probably the most useful DIY dog project in this roundup. I use this DIY dog gate all the time. The dimensions can be adjusted to fit your door opening and can be matched to coordinate with the colors of your home. Oh, you can find the plans for the wine cabinet here.

Gift Idea

All of these DIY dog projects would make a great gift for pet parents. Pair any of the projects with some quality doggie supplies and you’ll have a happy human and hound on your hands! Here are some “Coco tested and Coco approved” products that we use and love!

Shampoo
This shampoo works great for Coco. I’ve tried other brands, but they left her hair feeling coarse and it would easily tangle. This natural shampoo leaves her hair feeling super soft, her coat appears whiter and it leaves her nearly tangle free.

Microfiber Drying Towel
After Coco’s bath I dry her with this towel. In the past I dried her with a bath towel, but this towel dries her much more quickly!

Dog Brush
After Coco is washed and dried, I use this brush to comb out any snarls and smooth her coat. It works great on her thick coat.

Natural Flea and Tick Spray
This natural flea and tick spray is a staple when we head into the woods or go camping. A little spritz and it keeps fleas, ticks and mosquitoes away. Plus, it kills them on contact. It’s natural and has a pleasant herbal smell.

Earth Friendly Poop Bags
Strong and earth friendly, we use these poop bags anytime we go for a walk at the park or around town.

Thank you for stopping by and celebrating Coco’s gotcha day with me. Do you have a story you want to share about your pet’s gotcha day? Please tell me about it in the comments!
