NOTE: I designed this cabinet in SketchUp to lay out the dimensions and construction details, then used AI to create a “finished” image so you can see what the project could look like once built.
In a few tutorials, I’ve mentioned that I built some furniture for a friend who owns several vacation rentals.
A couple of months back, he was getting ready to sell them, but then his agent called with a curveball. Turns out, the one condo in the building he didn’t own had just hit the market. The agent told him it was a smart buy because it meant he could host larger groups. So instead of selling, he bought another one, lol.
Which is great news for me, because it means I might get to build a few more pieces. The new place is furnished, but it’s pretty bare when it comes to tables.
Make it Your Own
While poking around Wayfair for inspiration, I spotted a nightstand that grabbed my attention. What I really liked about it is how flexible the design is. With just a few tweaks, it can fit into almost any style:
- Skip the X-brace for a clean Shaker look.
- Add cove molding inside the door for a traditional vibe.
- Highlight the deep side recesses with X-braces for farmhouse charm.
- Add rails at the top and bottom for more of a Mission style.
Want even more ways to customize it? Ken, a member of Skateholder’s Edge, suggested, “I could also see this with a drawer in the cubby or expand the depth a bit and use it as a living room end table. Could remove the door and put shelves in there for a more open option.”
