Shoe storage is one of the projects I hear about the most, and the requests are usually a toss-up between freestanding and wall-mounted.

While researching ideas, I came across a bench with a cushion that caught my eye, and that became the inspiration for this bench-style version. It’s perfect for an entryway but could work just about anywhere:

  • Bedroom – Placed at the foot of the bed for seating, storage, or a place to set out clothes and shoes.
  • Mudroom/Laundry Room – Handy for putting on boots or shoes, and the slatted shelf lets footwear dry out.
  • Closet – Inside a walk-in closet for seating and shoe organization.
Living Room – As extra seating or even as a slim coffee table alternative, with baskets on the lower shelf instead of shoes.
  • Hallway – In a wider hallway, doubling as a seat and storage without taking much floor space.

I pictured it with a 3″ foam cushion on top for comfort, but even a few throw pillows would work.

I kept the build simple with pocket hole joinery, but of course you can use any method you like.
